Never hesitant to ask an absurd question, PBS’ Yamiche Alcindor pressed Jen Psaki on why the White House wasn’t supporting Maxine Waters in what represented the latest reminder that PBS shouldn’t get a dime of taxpayer money.
Though I’m sure few missed it, the comments from Waters in question were before the verdict in the Derek Chauvin trial, where she called for her supporters to “get confrontational” if they don’t get what they want. “We’re looking for a guilty verdict and we’re looking to see if all of the talk that took place and has been taking place after they saw what happened to George Floyd,” she said. “We got to stay on the street. And we’ve got to get more active, we’ve got to get more confrontational. We’ve got to make sure that they know that we mean business.”
Waters had previously encouraged to supporters to “get in the faces of” Trump administration officials in 2018.
As cliché as it is to even bother pointing out; we all know what would happen if a Republican made such comments, but Waters will likely face no consequences because she’s a Democrat.
But God forbid there be any chance of Waters suffering the slightest consequences, Yamiche wants the White House to have her back.
“Speaker Nancy Pelosi came to the defense of Representative Waters. Rep. Waters clarified.. ‘my actual words don’t matter.’ I wonder why the White House isn’t also coming to the defense of Rep. Waters given the fact that she is now facing an onslaught of attacks especially by… Republicans,” Alcindor stated.
“I wonder why the White House isn’t saying we back what she said about being confrontational, she as obviously not threatening violence. There are civil rights leaders saying that’s what civil rights is to be confrontational, to be active,” she asked.
Psaki then dodged the question with no pledge to circle back, saying that Waters “clarifying” comments was “more powerful” than the White House voicing their support.
The judge in the Chauvin trial, Judge Peter Cahill, said before the jury finding Chauvin guilty on all counts that Waters’ comments “may result in this whole thing being overturned” down the line on appeal.
It’s no wonder the White House isn’t exactly enthusiastic to rally behind Waters’ comments – but it’s apparently a mystery to Yamiche.
