Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) belittled Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s (D-NY) impact on the Democratic party during an interview over the weekend.
60 Minutes anchor Lesley Stahl asked Pelosi about Ocasio-Cortez and her progressive “wing” of the Democratic party, the Speaker interjected, “That’s like five people.”
‘No, it’s – the progressive group is more than five,’ Stahl responds.
‘Well, the progressive – I’m a progressive. Yeah,’ Speaker Pelosi continued.
It is not the first time Pelosi has taken a dig at the socialist freshman congresswoman.
Last week, the Speaker told USA Today that passing legislation was more important than amassing Twitter followers–an apparent swipe at Ocasio-Cortez.
“While there are people who have a large number of Twitter followers, what’s important is that we have a large number of votes on the floor of the House,” she told the newspaper.
Pelosi also seems unimpressed with Ocasio-Cortez’s radical Green New Deal plan.
When asked about the plan in a February interview with Politico, Pelosi responded, “It will be one of several or maybe many suggestions that we receive. The green dream, or whatever they call it, nobody knows what it is, but they’re for it, right?”
Shortly after her election in November, Ocasio-Cortez joined a group of about 200 protesters and stormed Speaker Pelosi’s office, urging her and fellow Democrats to act on climate change. Fifty one of the demonstrators were arrested, however the then-congresswoman elect had left before the arrests began.
