Republican rep. Burgess Owens of Utah tore into Stacey Abrams for claiming that voter ID laws disproportionately impacted black Americans. Owens was responding to Abrams testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee about new voting laws, including the voting laws in Georgia.
Abrams had been asked by Senator John Cornyn: “So voter ID, sometimes it’s racist, sometimes it’s not racist?”
Abrams replied “The intent always matters, sir. And that is the point of this conversation, that is the point of the Jim Crow narrative. That Jim Crow did not simply looked at the activities, it looked at the intent, it looked at the behaviors that were disproportionately used by people of color.”
Owens was understandably irritated by Abrams implying that black Americans weren’t even competent enough to get a voter ID. Owens said: “To say that black people cannot get an ID is an insult. We’re as smart, as tenacious, as desirous of independence as anybody else. Anyone that says that’s not the truth is just pure racist.”
Good for Burgess Owens for saying something most Americans believe. To say that we shouldn’t have voter ID because black Americans are too stupid and incompetent to handle doing something so simple is insulting. It sounds like an argument the KKK would make, yet it’s liberal Democrats arguing the position. Why do they do that? Because that insulting, racist argument is still better for them than the truth, which is that they believe they’re benefitting from election fraud, and putting voter ID requirements in would make it harder for them to gain votes via fraud.
Owens also recently slammed Democrats for comparing voter ID to “Jim Crow.”
Americans, including black Americans have consistently said that they want voter ID. In fact, in a Rasmussen poll released last month, 75% of Americans as a whole and 69% of black Americans favored voter ID. Democrats are on the wrong side of this issue and their racist presumption that black Americans can’t handle it doesn’t reflect well on their party.
