Former Vice President Joe Biden’s campaign is “freaking out” over his performance in last night’s Democratic presidential debate, according to a report.

Washington Correspondent for New York Magazine Olivia Nuzzi wrote on Twitter, “A source close to the Biden campaign tells me his staff is ‘freaking out’ about his poor performance tonight.”

“The source said that internally, field staff says the campaign-organized debate watch parties in early voting states have been ‘awkward’ and that Biden isn’t playing well to those who attended.”

Nuzzi followed up, claiming Biden’s staff say he is ignoring his debate prep and is “set in his ways.”

However, Biden spokesperson Kate Bedingfield denies Nuzzi’s reporting:

Biden endured a heated exchange with Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA), who slammed the former VP for his “hurtful” record of working with segregationist senators.

Biden defended himself, responding, “That’s a mischaracterization of my position across the board. I did not praise racists. That is not true, number one. Number two, if we want to have this campaign litigated on who supports civil rights and whether I did or not, I’m happy to do that. I was a public defender. I didn’t become a prosecutor. I came out and I left a good law firm to become a public defender when in fact, my city was in flames because of the—the assassination of Dr. King, number one. Now, number two, as the U.S.—as—excuse me—as the vice president of the United States, I worked with a man who in fact, we worked very hard to see to it we dealt with these issues in a major, major way. The fact is that in terms of bussing, the bussing, I never—you would’ve been able to go to school the same exact way because it was a local decision made by your city council. That’s fine. That’s one of the things I argued for that we should not be—we should be breaking down these lines.”

Eventually, throughout his exchange with Harris, Biden cut himself off and said, “Anyway,my time’s up, I’m sorry.”
