There’s been a debate over whether or not the inclusion of Robert F. Kennedy Jr. in the 2024 presidential race as an independent will siphon off more votes from Donald Trump or Joe Biden - and Kennedy may just have just guaranteed he’ll only be pulling support from the left.
While speaking to Sage Steele, Kennedy was asked if there should be any limits on abortion. “Should there be a limit or are you saying all the way up to full-term, a woman has a right to have an abortion?” she asked.
When Kennedy replied that he didn’t think anyone would want to end a pregnancy in the eighth month, and said he wanted the choice in the hands of the mother, Steele pressed him further. Kennedy eventually revealed he supported abortion “Even if it’s full-term,” but added that “I don’t think it’s ever okay” in an attempt to moderate his statement. When Steele pointed out that would allow late-term abortions, Kennedy reiterated, “I think we have to leave it to the women rather than the state.”

This caused confusion with his own running mate Nicole Shanahan, who reacted with surprise to his comments; “My understanding with Bobby’s position is that, you know, every abortion is a tragedy, is a loss of life. My understanding is that he absolutely believes in limits on abortion, and we’ve talked about this. I do not think, I don’t know where that came from.”
