In San Francisco, the school board there voted 6-1 to remove schools named after people with “offensive histories” like Abe Lincoln, Thomas Jefferson, George Washington, Paul Revere, James Monroe, FDR, Teddy Roosevelt, Francis Scott Key, Robert Louis Stevenson, and even Diane Feinstein!
San Francisco school board member Mark Sanchez bizarrely said, according to HotAir’s Ed Morrissey: “It’s a message to our families, our students, and our community. It’s not just symbolic. It’s a moral message.” How does a sane person even respond to that? If your “moral message” is that the greatest people in American history — and Dianne Feinstein — are all actually bad because their beliefs and actions in the past don’t confirm with 2021 “wokeness,” your “moral message” is garbage. Essentially, you are calling for a meaningless world where nothing you can ever do is more important than slavishly adhering to whatever the “wokethink” of the moment happens to be. What is “moral” about that?
Even as the San Francisco school board focuses on the horrors of schools being named after Founding Fathers and the Republican President that freed the slaves, schools are still closed in San Francisco. In San Francisco, they can’t figure out how to keep homeless people from defecating in the streets or get kids back into schools, but they have all the time in the world to figure out why Abe Lincoln is extremely offensive to them.
For a nation to hold together, it needs at least some shared values, and as a patriotic American, it’s hard to see what meaningful values you share with people who think Washington, Lincoln, and Jefferson are bad guys.
