A divided Supreme Court voted 5-4 last night to deny an emergency appeal from abortion providers, the ACLU, and others to block enforcement of Texas’ new law prohibiting abortions after six weeks.

Justice John Roberts joined the liberals and dissented.

It is the strictest law against abortion since the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision, and will prohibit 85-90% of abortions in the state. Many other states are now likely to follow suit.
