A study by the Center for Justice Research found that gun violence fell in six of Ohio’s eight largest cities following legislation that allowed for the permitless carry of firearms.

Ohio’s permitless carry law took effect on June 13, 2022. The study looked at the period between June 2021 and June 2023, and found that while gun crime increased in Dayton (by 6%) and Cincinnati (5%), it fell in Columbus, Cleveland, Toledo, Akron, Dayton, Parma, and Canton.

Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost said of the study that “This is not to downplay the very real problem of crime in many neighborhoods in our cities – you don’t need a research team to see that gun violence destroys lives, families and opportunity,” but added that “The key takeaway from this study is that we have to keep the pressure on the criminals who shoot people, rather than Ohioans who responsibly exercise their Second Amendment rights.”
