Cory Booker to Introduce Senate Slavery Reparations Bill

Democratic 2020 presidential candidate Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ) is introducing legislation to study reparations for African Americans.

Booker announced on Twitter,”I will be introducing a bill to study reparations proposals for African-Americans – the Senate companion to @JacksonLeeTX18’s HR40 bill. Our hope is this will finally begin to right the economic wrongs of persistent racism, white supremacy & implicit racial bias in our nation.”

Politico reports: The bill, H.R. 40, by Lee (D-Texas) would create a congressional panel to study the possibility of reparations for the descendants of slaves. Former Rep. John Conyers of Michigan first introduced the legislation in 1989.

Senate to Vote on Green New Deal, Forcing Dems to go on Record

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) will allow a vote on Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s (D-NY) radical Green New Deal.

Yesterday, McConnell told reporters, “I’ve noted with great interest the Green New Deal. And we’re going to be voting on that in the Senate. We’ll give everybody an opportunity to go on record and see how they feel about the Green New Deal.”

The Green New Deal proposal has come under fire by many on the right for its unrealistic and radical agenda and embarrassing “frequently asked questions” (FAQ) paper.

The FAQ document–which has since been scrubbed from Ocasio-Cortez’s website–promised to make air travel “unnecessary,” guaranteed a job for every person in America, and “economic security” for those “unwilling” to work.

The FAQ document also tackled the dire issue of “farting cows.” It states, “We set a goal to get to net-zero, rather than zero emissions, in 10 years because we aren’t sure that we’ll be able to fully get rid of farting cows and airplanes that fast.”

Even House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) seemed dismissive of the plan, telling Politico last week, “It will be one of several or maybe many suggestions that we receive. The green dream, or whatever they call it, nobody knows what it is, but they’re for it, right?”

Fox News points out that the Senate vote will have implications for Democrats running in the 2020 presidential race:

“But McConnell’s move to bring the plan to a vote on the Senate floor will be a key test for Democratic presidential candidates such as Sens. Kamala Harris, Cory Booker, Elizabeth Warren, Kirsten Gillibrand, who are running on the progressive platform in 2020.

While backing of the far-left proposal will ultimately improve their liberal bona fides and their support from the Democratic base, the support of the plan will undoubtedly be the target of attacks during the general election.”

Cory Booker Announces 2020 Presidential Run

New Jersey Senator Cory Booker announced he will run for President in 2020.

Booker made his announcement on his new website which included a two-minute campaign launch video.

“In America we have a common pain, but what we’re lacking is a sense of common purpose,” he says in the video.

“I believe that we can build a country where no one is forgotten, no one is left behind; where parents can put food on the table; where there are good-paying jobs with good benefits in every neighborhood,” he continues.

Fox News reports that Booker skipped setting up an exploratory committee as a first step towards his White House run. His campaign aides said Booker will visit Iowa February 8-9 and then head straight to South Carolina February 10-11. He will also go to New Hampshire over President’s Day weekend.

Booker joins a long list of Democrats who have thrown their hats into the race. Among them, Senator Senator Kamala Harris (D-CA), Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (D-HI) and former HUD secretary Julian Castro. Sen Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) and Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand have set up exploratory committees.
