Watch Live: President Trump Makes Announcement on Government Shutdown

President Trump is making an announcement on the government shutdown after the Senate failed yesterday to pass bills to reopen the federal government.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi signaled yesterday she is unwilling to negotiate with the President.

When asked by a reporter if House Democrats were working on a counteroffer to President Trump, Pelosi replied “That’s not true. That’s not true. That’s not true.” The Speaker continued, “There’s not any negotiation behind the scenes or anything like that.”

Pelosi Says Dems NOT Working on a Counteroffer to Trump Border Wall Demands

Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) announced today that Democrats are not working on a counteroffer to President Trump’s border wall demands, leaving no end in sight to the partial government shutdown.

When asked by a reporter if House Democrats were working on a counteroffer to President Trump, Pelosi replied “That’s not true. That’s not true. That’s not true.”

“We are doing what we have been doing all along: working on our congressional responsibility to write bills, appropriations bills, to keep government open. Many of those bills have come to the floor again and again, just this week. The Homeland Security bill was not finished,” she said. “Hopefully it will be finished soon and out of that you will see our commitment to border security.”

The Speaker continued, “There’s not any negotiation behind the scenes or anything like that.”

The Hill reports:

The remarks arrive as Democratic leaders are expected to release their own plan to bolster border security, to include enhanced surveillance technologies and reinforcement of existing physical barriers — but no new wall construction.

House Majority Whip James Clyburn (D-S.C.) said Wednesday that the Democrats are prepared to match Trump’s figure of $5.7 billion for border security — with two stipulations: it can’t be used for new wall construction, and the negotiations must happen after the shutdown has ended.

Democrats Reject Trump’s Invitation for Border Security Meeting at White House

Democratic lawmakers rejected President Trump’s invitation for a border security meeting today at the White House.

Fox News reports:

A senior administration official told Fox News that the president had invited Democrats to join his lunch with members of Congress in the Roosevelt Room shortly after noon. But moments before the session, White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders said in a statement that nobody took them up on the offer.

Sanders said in her statement, “The President has a proposal on the table that includes additional technology at ports of entry, allows minors from Central America to seek asylum in their home country, and physical barriers between ports of entry made of steel instead of concrete. Today, the President offered both Democrats and Republicans the chance to meet for lunch at the White House. Unfortunately, no Democrats will attend. The President looks forward to having a working lunch with House Republicans to solve the border crisis and reopen the government. It’s time for the Democrats to come to the table and make a deal.”

The President didn’t invite Speaker Pelosi to the meeting, and instead reached out to rank-and-file members. Pelosi gave her blessing for the members to attend, however, they ultimately decided to boycott the meeting.

Last Wednesday, the President walked out on a meeting with Pelosi and Schumer after they refused to budge on the border wall.

The President tweeted after the brief meeting, “Just left a meeting with Chuck and Nancy, a total waste of time. I asked what is going to happen in 30 days if I quickly open things up, are you going to approve Border Security which includes a Wall or Steel Barrier? Nancy said, NO. I said bye-bye, nothing else works!”

Democrats Fly on Chartered Jet to Puerto Rico During Govt Shutdown, Hit the Beach

About 30 Democratic Lawmakers and their families took a chartered jet to Puerto Rico over the weekend to attend the Congressional Hispanic Caucus BOLD PAC, where they met with lobbyists and received a “special performance” of the Broadway show, “Hamilton.”

The event took place at a oceanfront resort where rooms cost about $429 a night, according to Fox News. Those in attendance did pay for their “Hamilton” tickets themselves.

Fox News reports:

Around 109 lobbyists and corporate executives are named in a memo welcoming the guests, which include some from prominent Washington firms, R.J. Reynolds, Facebook, Comcast, Amazon, PhRMA, Microsoft, Intel, Verizon, and unions like the National Education Association.

A spokesman for the BOLD PAC — part of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus — would not tell the Examiner which members of Congress would be attending. But U.S. Sen. Bob Menendez, D-N.J., was spotted on the beach Saturday, according to a FOX News producer.

The chartered jet that carried the attendees also brought 250 pounds of donated medical supplies. The trip is the largest congressional delegation to the island since it was devastated by the September 2017 hurricane.

White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders slammed Democrats yesterday in a tweet, writing, “Democrats in Congress are so alarmed about federal workers not getting paid they’re partying on the beach instead of negotiating a compromise to reopen the government and secure the border.”
