DOJ Announces “Broad” Review of Deep State Misconduct/ FISA Abuses

In a letter to House Judiciary Chairman Jerrold Nadler (D-NY), the Department of Justice announced it would be conducting a “broad” and “multifaceted” review of potential Deep State misconduct and FISA abuses.

It will also be investigating the activities of several “non-governmental organizations and individuals.”

Fox News reports:

The information was contained in a letter to House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler, D-N.Y., who had inquired as to the scope of [U.S. attorney John] Durham’s investigation. The letter could indicate that the DOJ is looking closely at work done during the campaign by Fusion GPS, the firm retained by the Hillary Clinton campaign and Democratic National Committee (DNC) to conduct opposition research against the Trump campaign.

Fusion GPS, in turn, hired British ex-spy Christopher Steele to produce an unverified and largely discredited dossier that the FBI went on to cite in secret Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) court applications to surveil former Trump aide Carter Page.

Last week, sources assured Fox News that U.S. attorney John Durham–who was hired by Attorney General William Barr to investigate the origins of the Russia probe–was “very dialed in” and “asking all the right questions.”

Justice Department sources are also telling Fox that Durham has met with Barr “on multiple occasions in recent weeks.”

Fox reports:

Fox News has learned that Durham has been getting briefed on the “four corners” of the investigations into the FBI’s use of Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) warrants, among other issues….

News of Durham’s high level of engagement in the probe comes days after Barr said he has not received answers from the intelligence community that were “at all satisfactory” in the early stages of his review into the origins of the Russia investigation.

Barr appointed Durham last month to “examine the origins of the Russia investigation and determine if intelligence collection involving the Trump campaign was ‘lawful and appropriate.’”

Durham has previously investigated corruption in law enforcement and the destruction of CIA videos.

Congressman Mark Meadows (R-NC) praised Barr’s choice of Durham as special prosecutor.

On Twitter, the lawmaker wrote, “John Durham is an outstanding choice for special prosecutor investigating 2016 pre-election activities—his selection further demonstrates Bill Barr’s tenacity and determined desire to get to the truth and restore credibility at the top tier of the DOJ and FBI.”

President Trump has repeatedly made calls to “investigate the investigators.”

After the Mueller report’s release in April, he tweeted, “Mueller, and the A.G. based on Mueller findings (and great intelligence), have already ruled No Collusion, No Obstruction. These were crimes committed by Crooked Hillary, the DNC, Dirty Cops and others! INVESTIGATE THE INVESTIGATORS!”
