Amash LEAVES Freedom Caucus After Calling for Trump Impeachment

Michigan Congressman Justin Amasn (R) announced last night he was leaving the conservative House Freedom Caucus after calling for President Trump’s impeachment.

Last month, Amash drew criticism from his fellow party members after he argued that the president engaged in “impeachable conduct” and claimed that Attorney General William Barr “deliberately misrepresented” Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia report.

The embattled lawmaker was subsequently rebuked by Freedom Caucus members, who voted unanimously on May 21 to condemn him for his comments.

Freedom Caucus chairman Mark Meadows (R-NC) told reporters, “Justin Amash’s conclusions are poorly informed and fatally flawed and don’t represent the views of any of the Freedom Caucus members that I’m aware of.”

Last night, Amash told CNN reporter Haley Byrd on his decision to leave the group, “I have the highest regard for them, and they’re my close friends. I didn’t want to be a further distraction for the group.”

Soon after his controversial remarks, conservative Michigan State Representative Jim Lower announced he would run as a primary challenger to Amash.

In a statement, Lower said, “I am a Pro-Trump, Pro-Life, Pro-Jobs, Pro-2nd Amendment, Pro-Family Values Republican. Amash has not only failed to support President Trump as the President works to make the United States stronger and safer, he has now united with radical liberals like Democratic Congresswomen Rashida Tlaib (D-Detroit) to try and bring down our President. He must be replaced and I am going to do it.”

Freedom Caucus Unanimously Votes to Condemn Amash for Impeachment Comments

The House Freedom Caucus officially condemned its member, Rep. Justin Amash (R-MI) yesterday after the Congressman called for President Trump’s impeachment.

The Hill reports that Freedom Caucus member Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) said, “We had a good discussion and every single member, I think now based on who was there and our board meeting was probably over 30 members, every single member disagrees and strongly with the position Justin took over the week, and we’re focused on the now,” he said.

“I mean, look, we’re focused on the fact that what the FBI did was wrong. We think that [Attorney General William] Barr’s handled himself exactly the way the American people want the attorney general to handle themselves, and he’s going to get to bottom of all this.”

Over the weekend, Amash tweeted his support for President Trump’s impeachment, writing:

Here are my principal conclusions:
1. Attorney General Barr has deliberately misrepresented Mueller’s report.
2. President Trump has engaged in impeachable conduct.
3. Partisanship has eroded our system of checks and balances.
4. Few members of Congress have read the report.

Pro-Trump Michigan State Rep. Jim Lower was quick to criticize Amash and announced he would challenge the congressman in the 2020 primary.

WWMT reports that Lower released a statement saying, “I am a Pro-Trump, Pro-Life, Pro-Jobs, Pro-2nd Amendment, Pro-Family Values Republican. Amash has not only failed to support President Trump as the President works to make the United States stronger and safer, he has now united with radical liberals like Democratic Congresswomen Rashida Tlaib (D-Detroit) to try and bring down our President. He must be replaced and I am going to do it.”

On Sunday, President Trump responded to Amash, calling him a “total lightweight.”

He wrote, “Never a fan of @justinamash, a total lightweight who opposes me and some of our great Republican ideas and policies just for the sake of getting his name out there through controversy. If he actually read the biased Mueller Report, “composed” by 18 Angry Dems who hated Trump….”
