Art of the Deal: Trump Walks Away from North Korean Nuclear Negotiations

President Trump walked away from nuclear negotiations with North Korea today saying he would not give into Kim Jong Un’s demands to lift sanctions on the country prior to securing denuclearizaiton.

During a press conference after his meeting, the President said, “It was a very productive two days, but sometimes you have to walk and this was one of those times.”

Trump told reporters, “It was about the sanctions. Basically, they wanted the sanctions lifted in their entirety, and we couldn’t do that. They were willing to denuke a large portion of the areas that we wanted, but we couldn’t give up all of the sanctions for that.”

“I’d much rather do it right than do it fast,” he added. “…We’re in position to do something very special.”

Fox News reports:

Trump specifically said negotiations fell through after the North demanded a full removal of U.S.-led international sanctions in exchange for the shuttering of the North’s Yongbyon nuclear facility. Trump and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told reporters that the United States wasn’t willing to make a deal without the North committing to giving up its secretive nuclear facilities outside Yongbyon, as well as its missile and warheads program.

“Democrats’ hatred of Trump is undercutting an important foreign policy effort and is way out of line. If Republicans had pulled such a stunt, the mainstream media would be outraged!”

President Trump and Kim Jong Un met in Vietnam today where they briefly addressed reporters. Trump said the two countries’ relationships had progressed greatly since their last meeting in Singapore.

“It’s an honor to be with Chairman Kim,” Trump said. “I thought the first summit was a great success and I think this one, hopefully, will be equal or greater than the first.”

Kim responded through his translator, “Those 261 days [since we met in Singapore] were the days during which a lot of painstaking efforts were necessary and a lot of patience was needed. As I see you here today…that gives us a hope that we will be successful this time…”
