After Marjorie Taylor Greene was stripped of her committee assignments in the House with some Republican support, Senator Tom Cotton said that Republicans are quick to condemn the fringe right, while Democrats ignore the radical liberals in Congress.
After criticizing some of Greene’s past endorsements of various conspiracy theories that she’d later distance herself from, Cotton went on to note,
“Make no mistake, plenty of Democrats do and say outlandish things, too. Ilhan Omar has made multiple antisemitic statements. Maxine Waters urged mobs to attack Trump administration officials. Eric Swalwell cavorted with a Chinese spy. Chuck Schumer threatened two Supreme Court justices [if] they didn’t rule the way he wanted. I don’t see MSNBC and CNN and the liberal media calling them out for it. …What the Democrats proposed to do, to reach into the minority and decide who the minority party is going to put on committees is unprecedented, and if they go down that path, then mark my words, Republicans in two years, we’ll go down the same path. Should Ilhan Omar, who’s made multiple antisemitic statements be sitting on the Foreign Relations Committee? Should Eric Swalwell, cavorting with a Chinese spy be sitting on the Intelligence Committee? …This is a very dangerous precedent that the Democratic majority in the House wants to set when they’re on the precipice of losing that majority next year. What Democrats and the liberal media want to do is to leverage a fringe of extremist statements and violence from the right against mainstream conservatives in a way that they would never do on the left.”
Tom Cotton is absolutely right and if the Republicans have any brains and guts at all they will make sure that what’s good for the goose is good for the gander. There are always, always, always people in Congress who aren’t fit to be there, and if those people aren’t allowed to be on congressional committees, then it’s worth noting that there are probably 1o or 20 Democrats like that for every Republican.
Should they be treated the same way as Republicans are today when the GOP takes over? Absolutely — and as a little side note, if you were betting money, the smart bet would be on the GOP taking over in 2022. Democrats don’t understand human decency, patriotism, or fairness, but one thing they understand very well is, “This can also happen to me.” It’s up to Republicans to take over and then hammer that lesson home.
