House Majority Whip James Clyburn (D-SC) downplayed President Trump’s economic successes among the African American community, claiming black people were “fully employed during slavery.”
Speaking to Fox News host Neil Cavuto yesterday, Clyburn said he would back whoever the Democratic nominee is when asked if he would support former New York City mayor Mike Bloomberg.
“Even with the things he has said about African-Americans? Does that bother you?” Cavuto replied, referring to recent videos which surfaced showing Bloomberg making disparaging remarks about black Americans.
“Well, not as much as what Trump has said about African-Americans,” Clyburn replied. “Any time … that I go to the polls, I’m considering positives and negatives on all candidates. And I try to go with the one whose positives outweigh the negatives.”
Cavuto replied, listing off President Trump’s successes with the economy and African Americans to which Clyburn interrupted, telling the host the record unemployment numbers were “not true.”
“I’m saying that the African-American unemployment is not the lowest it’s ever been unless you count slavery,” Clyburn said. “We were fully employed during slavery. So it all depends how you measure this up.”
When asked if he gives president Trump any credit for the unemployment rate, Clyburn pointed to the Obama Administration and said, “I give him credit for continuing what we laid the foundation for back in 2009.”

Yesterday, we reported that President Obama tried to take credit for the successful economy, writing on Twitter, “Eleven years ago today, near the bottom of the worst recession in generations, I signed the Recovery Act, paving the way for more than a decade of economic growth and the longest streak of job creation in American history.”

The news comes just days after a poll found that most American voters credit Trump, not Obama for the booming economy.
