Former President Donald Trump has vowed to be in Alaska next year to campaign against incumbent Republican Sen. Lisa Murkowski, who he called “disloyal” and a “very bad Senator.”

From the Politico:

In a statement to POLITICO on Saturday, Trump said: “I will not be endorsing, under any circumstances, the failed candidate from the great State of Alaska, Lisa Murkowski. She represents her state badly and her country even worse. I do not know where other people will be next year, but I know where I will be — in Alaska campaigning against a disloyal and very bad Senator.”

Murkowski was a frequent critic of Trump’s during his four years in office, often drawing the president’s ire for being a swing vote in what was a narrow GOP-led Senate. Murkowski was also one of only seven Republican Senators to vote to convict Trump in his latest impeachment trial.

More recently, Trump decried Murkowski’s decision to vote to in favor of a controversial cabinet nominee:

Trump’s statement comes just days after Murkowski advanced the nomination of Rep. Deb Haaland (D-N.M.) to serve as interior secretary, which Trump called “yet another example of Murkowski not standing up for Alaska.”

Murkowski was the only Republican on the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee to approve the nomination. The 63-year-old senator said she “struggled” with whether to back Haaland, saying she had to reconcile the Democrat’s past opposition to oil drilling with her heritage as a Native American, a well-represented population in Murkowski’s home state.

Just what role Trump intends to play in a post-presidency political world remains a topic of intense speculation. The former president has hinted that he could decide to run again in 2024, but has not officially committed to another bid for the White House.

In the meantime, Trump seems content to take aim at his political opponents, most notably Republicans he believes abandoned him in the waning days of his administration. Trump has vowed to find and endorse primary opponents for many of those Republicans he considers disloyal, including Murkowski.
