Just in, President Trump has “assured NRA president Wayne LaPierre that he would not support universal background check legislation” reported the National Review. Apparently the president called LaPierre on the phone today and told him the news.

After the horrific El Paso murders at the beginning of this month there has been discussion on capitol hill that Trump may support stricter background checks for purchasing firearms. According to the National Review report, Trump “called LaPierre on August 7 to gauge the NRA’s support for the proposal but was quickly rebuffed.”

The proposal is referencing a press conference Trump gave in the White House Rose Garden just days after the two mass shootings where he mentioned a change in background check legislation could be coming.

Just hours ago, Wayne LaPierre tweeted from the official account for the NRA:

I spoke to the president today. We discussed the best ways to prevent these types of tragedies. @realDonaldTrump is a strong #2A President and supports our Right to Keep and Bear Arms!
