U.S. Holocaust Museum Rejects AOC’s “Concentration Camp” Comments

The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum has responded to Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s shameful comments comparing the situation at the southern border to “concentration camps.”

“The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum unequivocally rejects efforts to create analogies between the Holocaust and other events, whether historical or contemporary,” said the museum in a statement. “That position has repeatedly and unambiguously been made clear in the Museum’s official statement on the matter – a statement that is reiterated and reaffirmed now. The link to the Museum’s statement is here.”

The Holocaust museum also rejected a statement by one of its historians, Becky Erbelding, who tweeted in January of 2018, “The parallels to the 1930s-1940s refugee crisis are so obvious. Why can’t we learn?” she tweeted in response to an article about refugees in the Trump era:

“The Museum further reiterates that a statement ascribed to a Museum staff historian regarding recent attempts to analogize the situation on the United States southern border to concentration camps in Europe during the 1930s and 1940s does not reflect the position of the Museum.”

“The Museum deeply regrets any offense to Holocaust survivors and others that may have been engendered by any statement ascribed to a Museum historian in a personal capacity.”

Last week, Ocasio-Cortez claimed in a social media video, “The U.S. is running concentration camps on our southern border and that is exactly what they are and um, if that doesn’t bother you I don’t…I like…we can have OK whatever…I want to talk to the people that are concerned enough with humanity that ‘never again’ means something…”

Since her comments, many on the left have rushed to her defense, including Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN), who said in a recent interview, “When you look at what is taking place, people are being put in camps.”

She continued, “And when you think about the definition, if we separate it from death camps, I would say these are camps and people are being concentrated in them. And so that’s the general definition.”

“I think a lot of people are conflating what a death camp looks like or a specific removal of people. These people are coming to the border,” she said. “We are removing them from the border. We are placing them in camps. Some of them are being removed from communities and being put in what we’re calling detention centers — but are essentially camps.”

One of the world’s leading Holocaust museums recently fired back at the congresswoman on Twitter:

Yad Vashem: The World Holocaust Remembrance Center in Jerusalem tweeted the Congresswoman this morning, “@AOC Concentration camps assured a slave labor supply to help in the Nazi war effort, even as the brutality of life inside the camps helped assure the ultimate goal of ‘extermination through labor.’ Learn about concentration camps.”

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) called for the representative to apologize “not only to the nation but to the world.”

“I think Congresswoman AOC needs to apologize,” McCarthy said, during a press conference yesterday. “Not only to the nation but to the world. She does not understand history.”

“She does not understand what is going on at the border at the same time. But there is no comparison…and to actually say that is embarrassing,” he continued.

“To take somewhere in history where millions of Jews died…and equate that to somewhere that’s happening on the border…she owes this nation an apology.”

However, on Wednesday, the Congresswoman remained defiant and refused to apologize.
