Speaking to the press before departing the White House to visit the victims of the weekend’s horrific mass shootings in Dayton, Ohio and El Paso, Texas the President spoke of his support on background checks:

I’m looking to do background checks, I think background checks are important. I don’t want to put guns into the hands of mentally unstable people or people with rage, or hate, sick people, I’m all in favor of it.

There’s a great appetite and I mean a very strong appetite for background checks and I think we can bring up background checks like we’ve never had before. I think both rep and dem are getting close to a bill or to doing something on background checks.

Rumors are beginning to spread that with Trump’s support for stronger background checks gun stocks are dropping. Although Trump says he will work with both Democrats and Republicans to strengthen background checks, he will not entertain an assault weapons ban saying there’s “no political appetite” to renew a ban on military-style rifles.
