Joe Bidenâs ATF Director Steve Dettelbach refused to answer if his agencyâs new pistol brace rules will result in Americans being thrown in prison if they donât comply.
âIâm trying to figure out how this works,â Republican Rep. Jeff Van Drew bega to ask. âWhat kind of enforcement mechanisms will the ATF utilize to impose fines or maybe up to 10 years in jail time for those who do not comply or are unaware of the pistol brace rule. How do you gonna do that?â
The ATF pistol brace rule requires gun owners to register pistols with stabilizing braces with the ATF, turn over their guns, or face 10 years in jail.
Dettelbach refused to directly address the question, leading Van Drew to repeat it. Nonsensically, Dettelbach said that the âATFâs mission remains focussed on protecting the American people from violent crimeâ - which doesnât answer how theyâll enforce the pistol brace rule - nor is there any reason to believe that pistol braces are playing any significant role in fueling gun violence. Thereâs no reason to think that a pistol brace ban will reduce gun violence, but it is guaranteed to create countless new previously-law-abiding âcriminalsâ that accidentally violate the pointless new rule.
Undeterred, Van Drew then attempted to get the ATF director to answer this simple question a third time.
âIâm trying to get you to answer my question. Hypothetically speaking, if I fail to comply with the ATFs final rule by May 31st, what will the ATF do to me and 40 million other Americans?â
And still, no answer.
We can only wonder why.
