Barr “Reviewing Conduct” of FBI’s Russia Probe, Says IG FISA Abuse Probe Nearing End

Attorney General William Barr said today that he is “reviewing the conduct” of the FBI’s Trump-Russia probe and that the Inspector General’s investigation into FISA abuse allegations is nearing an end.

At today’s House Appropriations Commerce, Justice, Science and Related Agencies Subcommittee hearing, Barr was asked if the Justice Department was investigating how it used the salacious and unverified anti-Trump dossier as a “predicate” for a FISA order on a United States citizen.

“The office of the inspector general has a pending investigation of the FISA process in the Russia investigation and I expect that that will be complete in probably may or June, I am told,” said Barr. “So hopefully we’ll have some answers from Inspector General [Michael] Horowitz on the issue of the FISA warrants.”

He continued, “I am reviewing the conduct of the investigation and trying to get my arms around all of the aspects of the counterintelligence investigation that was conducted during the summer of 2016.”

When asked if he would be investigating who leaked the existence of the FISA warrant against Trump campaign volunteer Carter Page, Barr replied, “I haven’t seen the referrals yet from Congressman Nunes, but obviously if there’s a predicate for an investigation it will be conducted.”

Fox News points out that Barr’s review could coincide with U.S. Attorney John Huber’s work:

Barr’s review could dovetail with the work U.S. Attorney John Huber has been doing. In 2017, former Attorney General Jeff Sessions appointed Huber to review not only alleged surveillance abuses by the Justice Department and the FBI but also the handling of the probe into the Clinton Foundation and other matters.

But Republicans have expressed concern about Huber’s investigation, saying he’s made little progress and has not interviewed individuals they believed he should. Republicans, including President Trump, have only stepped up calls to investigate the origins of the Russia investigation with the completion of the Mueller investigation.
