Joe Biden took a break from vacationing to visit Maui, which has been ravaged by wildfires that killed at least 110, and have left nearly a thousand still missing.
Prior to giving a speech on Monday, Biden stopped in front of a search and rescue dog and joked about the boots the dog was wearing while petting it. "You guys catch the boots out here? That’s some hot ground, man," a bizarrely jubilant Biden said while smiling.
During his speech, Biden attempted to relate to the residents by telling a largely fabricated story about how he once suffered a house fire that nearly cost him his Corvette. “I don't want to compare difficulties, but we have a little sense, Jill and I, what it's like to lose a home… It was a Sunday and lightning struck at home on a little lake,” Biden said. “And to make a long story short, I almost lost my wife, my 67 Corvette and my cat.”
Biden has told this story numerous times over the years - but as the Associated Press reported at the time in 2004; the fire was “small” and “contained to the kitchen,” and that firefighters got it under control in 20 minutes, successfully preventing it from spreading.
Elsewhere during his visit, Biden conjured up memories of him checking his watch multiple times during the transfer of the remains of the 13 fallen U.S. service members during his botched withdrawal from Afghanistan when he appeared to briefly doze off as survivors of the wildfires shared their horrific experiences.
Meanwhile, East Palestine has been waiting on a visit from Biden since February - though given how this one went, that’s probably for the better.
