A 141-year-old statue of Abe Lincoln celebrating the emancipation of slaves in America has been removed in Boston. The bronze statue, which was a copy of a monument in DC, had been in the Boston Park Square since 1879.
However, a monument celebrating the Republican President that freed the slaves that was, according to the National Park Service, FUNDED by freed slaves, was too offensive for liberals in Boston and had to be removed.
Apparently, there were some people upset because there was a freed slave at Lincoln’s feet and they believed he was “kneeling” to Lincoln, which seems like desperately reaching to find something to be offended about. That’s doubly true because the figure at Lincoln’s feet was based on freed slave Archer Alexander and the idea is supposed to be that his shackles were broken and he was rising to his feet. Of course, you know liberals. The facts don’t matter when they get a chance to claim that something offends them.
After receiving a petition calling for the statue to be taken down and threats it would be torn down by a mob this summer, the Boston Arts Commission unanimously voted to remove the statue. Boston’s mayor Marty Walsh added, “After engaging in a public process, it’s clear that residents and visitors to Boston have been uncomfortable with this statue, and its reductive representation of the Black man’s role in the abolitionist movement.”
To hold a country together long-term, there have to be some shared values. If you believe that even statues of Lincoln are so offensive that they shouldn’t be allowed to stand, then what do we have in common? Note that it wasn’t just a few nutjobs pushing this, the liberals in charge of the city of Boston all went along with this nonsense. It’s a disgrace and it makes you wonder how long this country can continue to hold together as a nation.
