At long last, Washington DC’s “Black Lives Matter” plaza is no more.
Constructed amid the George Floyd racial hysteria of 2020, the political stunt took the form of a 35-foot-tall mural painted across two blocks. At one point “Defund the Police” was added to the mural, a portion the city later paved over.
The plaza's name will also be renamed. It's being reported that the mural is being destroyed following pressure from a Republican-led bill in Congress that threatened to slash federal funding to the nation’s capital if it remained.
The proposal aimed to withhold millions in federal dollars from D.C.’s budget unless the city reversed “divisive,” public displays, specifically targeting the mural. The threat carried more weight due to DC’s status as a federal district.
Crews began erasing the painted letters and removing signage late last week and it was process completed over the weekend.
DC Mayor Muriel Bowser said it was a “tough call,” but had to prioritize “keeping the city running.”
