Already facing record low approval ratings, Joe Biden’s decision to end Trump-era Title 42 border restrictions is proving to be his least popular policy yet.
According to Morning Consult:
Republicans were eager to seize on the Biden administration’s announcement last week that it will curtail the Title 42 public health measure that has allowed the United States to swiftly expel nearly 2 million illegals at the U.S.-Mexico border over the past two years, and a new Morning Consult/Politico survey shows why: It’s this administration’s most unpopular decision so far.
A majority of registered voters (56%) oppose the decision to remove the border controls implemented by the Trump administration, the largest backlash against a Biden administration policy among dozens tracked by Morning Consult since January 2021.
The response to the Title 42 decision eclipses the negative reaction to Biden’s September directive to raise the cap on refugees admitted into the country from 15,000 to 125,000 for the 2022 fiscal year.
While 60% of Democratic voters support the move, just 31% of independents and 8% of Republicans feel similarly.
White House communications director Kate Bedingfield admitted to reporters last month; “Title 42 is a public health directive, it is not an immigration or migration enforcement measure, so the decision on when to lift Title 42, we defer to the CDC. That being said, of course, we are planning for multiple contingencies, and we have every expectation that when the CDC ultimately decides it’s appropriate to lift Title 42, there will be an influx of people to the border.”
As for the size of that surge, DHS Secretary Mayorkas is preparing for a “worst case” scenario of over 18,000 illegals being encountered at the border per day in absence of Title 42, or over 500,000 a month.
