While Seattle’s Mayor Jenny Durkan was initially optimistic that the new republic of CHAZ and/or CHOP would lead us to a “summer of love,” those delusions were quickly met by reality in the form of a handful of shootings that have left two dead so far. The first person killed was a nineteen year old, and the second, killed yesterday, was a sixteen year old. Both were African-American.
Tragically, it’s very likely that the former victim would’ve survived had paramedics been able to enter CHAZ. After an active shooting police need to secure the area before paramedics can enter to operate, but CHAZ “residents” wouldn’t let them in, so paramedics couldn’t save the teenager, who ended up bleeding out for a half hour before dying as a result.
His father is now speaking out – and is calling for the national guard to intervene.
As KIRO7 reports:
Horace Lorenzo Anderson stood in the embrace of Andre Taylor, a leader in the local anti-police violence movement.
Anderson was there to shine a light on the murder of his 19-year-old son and namesake, who was shot and killed inside the CHOP zone last weekend.
He says the zone should go.
“This doesn’t look like a protest to me no more,” said Anderson. “That just looks like they just took over and said we can take over whenever we want to.” …
Anderson thinks the National Guard should be asked to return.
“They should deployed them here to say ‘Man, it’s time to go,’” said Anderson. ” ‘It’s time to move on. And break this up.’
President Donald Trump has previously threatened to deploy the National Guard to dismantle CHAZ/CHOP if Seattle doesn’t.
