On Wednesday, The House Judiciary Committee released a report exposing a sinister collusion between powerful corporations and social media users to censor websites, platforms, and podcasts deemed guilty of spreading unapproved speech.
According to the committee, corporate members of The World Economic Forumâs Global Alliance for Responsible Media may have violated antitrust laws by destroying the ad revenue of conservative media outlets (such as the Daily Wire), dissident personalities (such as Joe Rogan), and companies daring to platform conservative viewpoints (such as X).
Per the congressional report titled "GARM's Harm: How the World's Biggest Brands Seek to Control Online Speech," GARM states that it was "created to drive transparency in policies to help companies achieve âbrand safety,â or in other words âtransparency on where ads [are] placed [to] mak[e] sure that [advertisers] donât inadvertently supportâ certain content on social media platforms.â
Essentially, GARM members act as Orwellian-style thought police, demonizing speech they dislike and punishing alternative voices or pro-free speech platforms by revoking their ability to generate ad revenue.
Indeed, GARMâs power cannot be understated, with its members including the so-called âBig Sixâ advertisers. âIn the advertising industry, the âBig Sixâ refer to the âbiggest ad agency holding companies around the world,ââ explains the congressional report. âTogether, these companies hold nearly every major advertising agency.â
GARM says that itâs committed to âsafeguard[ing] the potential of digital media by reducing the availability and monetization of harmful content online.â
âHarmful content,â per GARM, includes content that contains âhate speechâ about âgender identity,â âinsensitiveâŚtreatment of debated social issues,â and âmisinformation.â In other words, GARM is the left-wing global arbiter of truth, wielding the power of the âBig Sixâ advertising agencies, among other powerful entities, to intimidate and silence speech threatening to the elites.
For instance, GARM directed its members to boycott Twitter {now X) shortly after Elon Musk bought the company. The initiative lead for GARM, Rob Rakowitz, denied this during a transcribed interview with the House Judiciary Committee. However, it was later proven that he lied to Congress after documentation from an unnamed GARM member company explicitly stated it had pulled advertisements from Twitter based on GARM's recommendations.
When discussing conservative media outlets such as The Daily Wire, Fox News, and Breitbart, GARMâs board of directors, known as its Steer Team, âstated that they hated those outlets' ideology and even discussed placing these outlets on GroupM's exclusion lists,â reads the committee report.
Additionally, a GARM Steer Team member tried to pressure Spotify into censoring Joe Rogan over the podcasterâs stance on the COVID-19 vaccine. According to the report, the Steer Team member, âasked Spotify how it could reconcile being a member of GARM with its stance against misinformation and threatened to halt advertising across Spotify if the platform did not take action against Joe Rogan.â
Last week, X officially announced it is partnering with GARM to censor information on the platform, despite GARM previously weaponizing itself against X and X owner Elon Musk insisting X is committed to âfree speech.âDon't miss the Dan Bongino Show
