Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, refused to answer questions after the arrest of Nasir Ahmad Tawhedi, a 27-year-old Afghan immigrant with reported terrorist leanings, who was allegedly planning an Election Day attack. The arrest followed an FBI investigation, which revealed Tawhedi had previously worked in a security role in Afghanistan for the CIA, according to CBS News.
A reporter questioned Mayorkas about the circumstances surrounding Tawhedi's entry into the U.S., asking how he was admitted, what screening procedures were conducted, and what visa he applied for. Mayorkas declined to answer, stating it was not the appropriate setting and shifted the focus to ongoing hurricane recovery efforts.
"I'm here in North Carolina, communicating with the individuals who are still conducting search and rescue operations, over 200 people have lost their lives in hurricane Helene,” said Mayorkas. “I'd be very pleased to answer your question in a different setting, but we're here to talk about emergencies and the support that we can deliver to people in desperate need."

Tawhedi reportedly entered the U.S. on September 9, 2021, just days after the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan, on a special immigrant visa. Both the White House and CIA also declined to comment on the specifics of his case.
John Daniel Davidson of The Federalist criticized Tawhedi's case, labeling it as a reflection of the failures of neoconservative foreign policy.
