The latest in a series of bad polling for Joe Biden shows that while Trump has retained virtually all of his support from the 2020 presidential election, Bidenâs has, in a literal sense, been more than decimated.
Steve Kornacki explained âOver the last few days weâve had four national polls come out showing small leads for Donald Trump. But whatâs interesting in those polls is you ask Republicans who theyâre supporting in a Trump-Biden match up. In these [three] polls, itâs 91-6, 92-5, 96-4 for Trump - this is Trumpâs share with Republicans in general election polling. What did he get among Republicans in 2020? He got 94%. What did he get among Republicans when he won in 2016? He got 92%.... Trumpâs support in the general election polls among Republicans really isnât showing any slack.â
While primary polling showing that a large share of Nikki Haley voters planned on voting for Joe Biden in a general election had led some to believe that this would mean a significant share of Republicans would be voting Democrat this time around, this phenomenon was almost entirely due to Democrats voting in open primaries. In other words, they were never actually voting Republican in the general, even if Haley were the nominee.
Kornacki continued âŚIn the context of what weâre seeing in the general election, the one who has the issue right now with the base is more Biden than Trump. This is from the New York Times poll - they asked folks, âHey, you voted for Trump in 2020. Are you still with Donald Trump?â 97% of his 2020 voters say theyâre still with him. Ask Bidenâs 2020 voters âAre you still with Biden?â The numberâs 85% there. So at least right now in the general election polling, itâs Trump whoâs taking more from Bidenâs voters than Biden whoâs taking from Trumpâs voters.â
