Nearly two centuries after Democrats argued that we needed to keep slavery for the crops to get picked, Florida Democrat Debbie Wasserman-Schultz is arguing that we need mass illegal immigration for the crops to get picked.

As the border crisis rages on post Title 42, Wasserman-Scultz thinks the real crisis would be for it to end. In response to a new Florida law aimed at fighting illegal immigration that will take effect July 1, Wasserman-Schultz bemoaned the law is “going to devastate our economy, tourism, construction, agriculture."

The new law requires some employers to use E-verify, and increases penalties for transporting illegals into Florida, invalidates driver's licenses for those who can't prove their legal status, and allocates $12 million to deport illegals out of Florida.

"I mean you’re going to have vegetables rotting in the field, you’re going to have construction sites that will lie dormant, or certainly will struggle to get workers to help make sure that they can make progress," she continued.

Watch below:

This remains one of the most bizarre arguments for illegal immigration. Even if we were to accept the (completely bogus) argument that farmwork is dominated by illegal labor, that doesn’t mean that’s the only option. While I’m no historian, one can infer from the continued existence that American citizens that we were indeed able to grow and eat food before our modern era of mass illegal immigration in the past half-century. An old picture of any city skyline or town whatsoever also provides strong evidence that we even had such miracles as construction back then too.

Nor is this a debate for the agriculture industry of any other countries. Looking abroad, even the most homogeneous countries of Europe with few illegal immigrants have figured out food (and construction!) too.

The average American liberal seems to get their opinions on the employment of illegal immigrants from Netflix shows, not the statistics. In reality, only 283,000 illegal aliens are employed in agriculture, according to an estimate from the Center for Migration Studies. Estimates of America’s illegal immigrant population range from 11 million to 30 million, meaning that (using the higher estimate) fewer than 1% of illegals are even employed in agriculture.

Of course, as everyone already knows, it’s the eventual votes of these illegals the likes of Wasserman-Schultz are really after.
