Democrat Congressman William Lacy Clay (D-MO) slammed his colleague, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) for her “ignorance” after she suggested Speaker Nancy Pelosi signaled her out for her race.
Speaking to Fox News yesterday, Clay said, “It was such a weak argument to say she was being picked on and that four women of color were being picked on by the speaker. It tells you the level of ignorance to American history on their part as to what we are as the Democratic Caucus.”
Clay claimed the accusation of racism showed that some of the “freshman members” lacked sensitivity to racism.
“It shows their lack of sensitivity to racism. To fall back on that (trope) is a weak argument. It has no place in a civil discussion.”
Earlier this week, in an interview with the Washington Post, Ocasio-Cortez claimed Pelosi’s “signaling out” of “newly elected women of color” was disrespectful.
“When these comments first started, I kind of thought that she was keeping the progressive flank at more of an arm’s distance in order to protect more moderate members, which I understood,” Ocasio-Cortez said. “But the persistent singling out . . . it got to a point where it was just outright disrespectful . . . the explicit singling out of newly elected women of color.”
