While his candidacy was always a longshot, the Robert F. Kennedy campaign’s polling numbers - and cash on hand - are heading to zero.
At his campaign’s peak, RFK Jr. polled in the double digits, and there was considerable debate on whether or not he would pull more votes from people who would’ve otherwise voted for Donald Trump, or would’ve otherwise voted for Joe Biden (now Kamala Harris).
As his campaign winds down, his running mate Nicole Shanahan suggested that they’re considering backing Trump.
In an interview on the podcast “Impact Theory” Shanahan said one option the campaign is weighing is whether it would be worth trying to win more than 5% of the popular vote in the 2024 election to establish “ourselves” as a viable third-party alternative. “There’s two options that we’re looking at and one is staying in, forming that new party, but we run the risk of a Kamala Harris and Walz presidency because we draw votes from Trump, or we draw somehow more votes from Trump,” she said.
And on the latter point, it’s clear that the RFK Jr. campaign is favoring the Trump campaign over Kamala’s; “Or we walk away right now and join forces with … Donald Trump and you know, we walk away from that and explain to our base why we’re making this decision.”
