During an interview with podcaster Brian Teta, The View host Sunny Hostin admitted that her “layup” question to Vice President Kamala Harris might have cost Harris the presidency.
During the campaign, Hostin famously asked Harris if she would do anything differently from President Biden if elected. Harris responded, “There is not a thing that comes to mind,” sparking immediate ads from former President Trump that capitalized on widespread dissatisfaction with the Biden administration.
"Look, I think it wasn't so much about the question, but it was really more about the answer," Hostin told Teta this week. “I followed up with, ‘Is there anything that you would do differently?’ And the reason I followed up is because that wasn't a gotcha question. That was a layup, really. It was an important question, and I think one she should have expected."

Hostin explained that she assumed Harris was prepared for the question and wanted to give the vice president an opportunity to differentiate herself from Biden and make her pitch to the American people. "I thought she would then say, ‘I would build on the wins that we've had. And I had a laundry list of wins in my head.’ And she didn't answer it that way. She said, ‘not a thing comes to mind,’" Hostin recalled.
