Texas attorney general Ken Paxton said yesterday on the New York City AM radio show “The Cats Roundtable” that the “only reason” anyone would be against voter ID is to make it easier to cheat.
The only argument that they had was that they claimed it was discriminatory. The reality is everybody knows that’s not true because you have to have a photo ID [for everyday life]. We know it’s not discriminatory because everyone knows you have to have a photo ID. The only reason you don’t want people to have a photo ID is that people can cheat. That’s the only rational answer as to why certain people want no photo ID requirements.
Is he right?
Well, the arguments that Democrats use on this issue have never made any logical sense. To begin with, everyone knows that you regularly need some form of ID to do all kinds of things. Want to rent a car? Get on an airplane? Buy liquor? Open a bank account? Get food stamps? Apply for a job? Rent an apartment? It goes on and on. Given that, if Democrats really believed the problem was that black Americans couldn’t get an ID, the sane solution would be to make it easier for people to get one. Yet, that’s not an issue that Democrats care about.
Furthermore, if Republicans were the ones arguing against voter ID because we claimed black Americans were too incompetent to get them, everyone would quite correctly call it racist. Democrats are getting a pass on this issue solely because they’re Democrats, but their primary argument on this issue is insulting to black Americans. How hapless do you have to believe someone is if you don’t think they can even manage to get a government ID?
Even the polling on this issue consistently runs against Democrats. 75% of Americans as a whole and 69% of black Americans support voter ID. So, why do Democrats fight tooth and nail against voter ID? For an incredibly cynical reason. Democrats who oppose voter ID assume that there’s cheating going on, believe their side benefits from it, and think not having voter ID makes it less likely their side will be caught. It’s a vile approach to politics, but that is why Democrats take the stand that they do on voter ID.
