ABC and WaPo Disavow Their Own Polling Showing Trump Up 9 Points vs. Biden

The polling unexpectedly shifted so far in Donald Trump’s favor in a hypothetical matchup vs. Joe Biden that the pollsters are disavowing their own polling.

In the latest ABC News/Washington Post poll, Biden is underwater by 19 points, and would lose 51-42 in a head-to-head against Donald Trump. 

Other polling has previously found that his VP, Kamala Harris, is the least popular VP in polling history - meaning that Dick Cheney was more popular than her after shooting someone and then never apologizing to them than she is today. 

While reporting on their poll on ABC’s This Week, Rich Klein reported that “this is perhaps the most startling result of our poll, the hypothetical rematch of Trump vs. Biden, our poll with the Washington Post pegs this at 51% against Biden’s 42%, giving Trump a nine point edge.” This lead is far outside the poll’s margin of error of 3.5 percentage points. 

He then attempted to downplay their own poll, noting that; “it is significantly different from most recent polls. It is an outlier than most polls recently,” pointing to the polling average from FiveThirtyEight showing a much closer race with Biden 1.9 points ahead. 

However, a separate aggregate of polls from Real Clear Politics has Trump leading Biden by 1.6 points. The only polls showing Biden leading in their sample are from Rasmussen Reports, Economist/YouGov, and Quinnipiac, who all have Biden leading by one point. Of note, Quinnipiac’s polling overestimated Biden’s support by 6.5 percentage points in 2020, while Economist/YouGov overestimated his support by 2.7 percentage points vs. the final “official” results. 

“In this poll there are some quirks, some oddities around the number of black voters and hispanic voters, and younger voters who seem to be supporting Trump. And this is hard to believe - we asked if Trump should be Constitutionally disqualified from office - and one in five people who said ‘yes’ said they’d vote for him anyway.”

Meanwhile, the Washington Post also denounced their own poll as an “outlier,” and said that the “unusual makeup of Trump and Biden’s coalitions” in the survey could also be to blame for a poll result daring to favor a Republican.
