No where but America has it been so common for the same ruling elites pushing aggressive COVID restrictions to be soon caught violating those same restrictions time and time again and face no actual consequences for doing so.
Across the Atlantic, impeachment has been floated as a potential consequence for U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who was caught attending parties during lockdown. His attendance (among other members of the U.K. government) sparked a police investigation and fines, and the fallout is far from over. Domestically, every liberal hypocrite caught violating their own restrictions has either offered a faux-apology (usually followed by them being caught violating the same restriction days later) or tried to justify their case as somehow unique.
The lack of consequences for the ruling class has predictably fueled sentiment that much of the restrictions we’ve seen were implemented just for the sake of flexing power itself. The New York Times’s Peter Baker practically confirmed that earlier this week, telling NBC that in the wake of a judge striking down the CDC’s transportation mask mandate, that “The Biden administration just is happy to have the mandates go away because they know that, politically, it’s just a mess, but they don’t want to give up the authority.”
Meanwhile, as the administration fights to reinstate those travel mask mandates, they’re barely pretending to be mask compliant elsewhere. Fox’s Brett Baier pressed Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg last night about the DOJ’s appeal of the court ruling despite the fact that Buttigieg and others will be attending the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, which isn’t requiring masks.
“You just told me you’re going to the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. The president’s going to the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. You’re not mandated to wear a mask there, but the administration at the same time is fighting a lawsuit to mandate people on planes, trains and … and buses to wear masks. So if you’re sitting at home, there’s a disconnect here,” Baier said.
Buttigieg replied, seemingly unaware that airplanes have air filtration systems; “Well, I think most of us understand the difference between a hotel ballroom and an airplane. And again, a lot of this is about what authorities the CDC has. So even if they don’t think we need it at all, they still want to make sure that we get clarity.”
