For a period of four years, Donald Trump was the lowest paid politician in Washington D.C. (albeit by choice), while Dr. Anthony Fauci was the highest paid. In the world of government it seems there’s no correlation between competence and pay – an observation backed by the revelation that scandal-plagued Governor Andrew Cuomo is the highest paid Governor in history.
According to Fox Business:
New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo is the country’s highest-paid governor in history with an annual salary of $225,000.
California Gov. Gavin Newsom, who will likely face a recall election, clocks in at number two with a 2020 salary of $202,000, according to Open The Books. The average gubernatorial salary was $143,270 in 2018, according to the Council of State Governments.
Cuomo was set to receive a $25,000 pay raise in 2021, which would have brought his salary to $250,000, but deferred it. The increase would have taken effect on Jan. 1, 2021, according to a resolution passed by the state Senate and Assembly in 2019.
The $25,000 increase was part of a three-year pay increase of $71,000, according to Open The Books.
After being made into a heroic figure by the media during the beginning of the pandemic, Cuomo faces numerous allegations of sexual harassment, and his nursing home scandal has finally been getting some media attention.
Despite all that, and calls to resign from many New York Democrats (some of whom have since been seen in public with him), there isn’t any reason to believe that he’s going anywhere. He’s taken a page out of the Ralph Northam playbook, which taught us that all a Democrat has to do to avoid consequences of a scandal are to ignore that there is one for a couple of weeks.
With media attention on Cuomo’s scandals now practically non-existent, and many of the same Democrats who called for his resignation just weeks ago now having no problem being seen with him in public, it’s clear that those calls were all just political theater to begin with.
