Americans continue buying a record amount of firearms, as is evidenced by record high background checks, a proxy for sales.
Last year set a record for gun sales, with each month setting a new record (for example, January 2020 set the record for more background checks than any other prior January, February 2020 had more background checks than any other February, etc.). Fueled in part by a field of Democrat presidential candidates hell bent on instituting a wide array of gun control measures at the beginning of the year, the instability created by the global pandemic and government responses to it, and the insane “defund the police movement,” there were plenty of factors that sent gun sales skyrocketing last year.
And every one of those records was surpassed in January 2021.
According to Breitbart’s Awr Hawkins:
January 2021 shattered the previous all-time high for the number of National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) checks performed in any month.
FBI figures show there were 4,317,804 NICS checks conducted in January 2021, eclipsing the previous record of 2,702,702, set in January 2020.
In addition to setting a single month record, the surge in background checks makes January 2021 record setting for the number of NICS checks witnessed during any month, period. The previous one-month record was the 3,740,688 NICS checks witnessed in March 2020.
Last year’s gun surge wasn’t due to existing gun owners purchasing more firearms – there were over five million new gun owners, likely the largest surge in gun ownership in U.S. history.
This rise in gun ownership coincides with gun control plummeting in popularity. According to polling from Gallup, “Americans are less likely than they have been since 2016 to call for increased gun control. The latest majority (57%) in the U.S. who call for stricter laws covering the sale of firearms marks a seven-percentage-point decline since last year. At the same time, 34% of U.S. adults prefer that gun laws be kept as they are now, while 9% would like them to be less strict.”
Meanwhile, Democrats are planning some of the craziest gun control measures on record. Last month Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee proposed a bill that would require the registration of all firearms, make the gun registry public (great news for thieves!), mandate universal licensing, require mandatory liability insurance policies, and require every existing gun owner to pass a psychological exam.
So much for “common sense” gun control.
